From October 9 to 11, 2024, the University of the Aegean had the honor of hosting Oksana Molderf, Head of the Project Support Unit at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. This visit marked a significant milestone in establishing academic ties between the two institutions and strengthening collaboration between Greece and Ukraine.

During the visit, discussions were held regarding the forthcoming signing of a memorandum of understanding, scheduled for the near future. As emphasized by the Rector of the University of the Aegean, Prof. Dimitris Papageorgiou, in his meeting with the Ukrainian academic, this memorandum is only the first step, as both institutions aim to develop long-term collaborations that will have a meaningful impact on their academic communities and beyond.

Meetings with representatives from various units of the University of the Aegean were also productive, providing valuable insights into internationalization, the management of international projects—particularly in terms of financial and administrative aspects—and quality assurance. The representatives believe that these discussions pave the way for effective collaboration in future international initiatives for the University of the Aegean.

Additionally, the ERUA Office team at the University of the Aegean had the opportunity to share information about the European Reform University Alliance (ERUA) and expressed hope that the University of Lviv will soon participate in the activities of this dynamic network. While Ukrainian universities can currently only join as associated partners in ERUA activities, both parties are optimistic that similar collaborations will officially open up for Ukraine in the near future.

This visit, supported by SWPS University in Poland and funded through the “Solidarity with Ukraine” program by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange, also holds symbolic significance for Greek-Ukrainian relations. Both parties reflected on their shared values and historical connections, highlighting the importance of academic collaboration as a bridge between nations, particularly during these challenging times.

As Oksana Molderf remarked, “This study visit is not only an important step in our academic collaboration but also a meaningful act of cultural diplomacy. It provides us with the opportunity to break down stereotypes and focus on discovering the many similarities between our institutions and countries. By building on these shared values and experiences, we can develop a strong, cooperative foundation for future projects. I am particularly optimistic about the potential collaboration, as well as our growing involvement as one of the leading Ukrainian universities, being highly interested in reforming Ukrainian educational landscape, in ERUA activities. Together, we can create meaningful, long-term partnerships that benefit both Greece and Ukraine and the European Union.”
